MandateThe primary mandate of the PGBRS is to promote and encourage safe non-motorized backcountry recreation in the Prince George region. We carry out this mandate by representing our member clubs and advocating on their behalf on important issues which impact non-motorized backcountry recreation values in our region. Through its member organizations, the PGBRS actively develops and manages the existing backcountry infrastructure including the many huts, cabins, and trails in the Prince George area. HistoryIn 1998, an informal group of avid backcountry users came together with the intent of establishing backcountry cabins for overnight ski and hiking use. The group soon recognized that their informal organization could play a greater role than the original mandate and discussions soon turned to the formation of a non-profit society to represent the interests of other non-motorized individuals and organizations in the Prince George area. The Prince George Backcountry Recreation Society is now a registered non-profit society, under the Society Act of British Columbia, which represents and advocates for non-motorized backcountry interests in the Prince George region. We currently represent approximately 1,700 members of eight local organizations including the Prince George chapter of the Alpine Club of Canada, the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, the Caledonia Ramblers Hiking Club, the Prince George Naturalists Club, the Northwest Brigade Paddling Club, the Sons of Norway Ski Club, the University of Northern British Columbia Outdoors Club, and the Fraser Headwaters Alliance.
